Type of course? Undulating parkland.
Pleasant staff? Wonderful. The young man at the quiche station gave me extra and the young woman at the dessert station gave me cake AND pavlova because I couldn’t decide.
Best hole? The 14th, because the tee is next to Betchworth Castle (see below). It is said the ruin and its grounds (the golf course) are haunted by a black dog. We did see a spaniel, but it wasn’t very scary.
Après golf? It was the Silver Open, so my teammates and I were treated to a two-course lunch and it was delicious.
Nice round? Fantastic. Beautiful, challenging course with inextricable bunkers and very difficult greens. Gorgeous views over the Surrey hills.
Special memory? When the Lady Captain came over looking for us with our card and my heart sank because I was convinced we’d filled it wrong and were disqualified.
Must play again? We’ll have to as we need to defend our title next year!
Well played to Celine and her team from Brighton and Hove. We have been playing in this event for many years and Helen and her team once again organised a brilliant competition, good food and marvellous prizes. We will be back next year!
Thanks Mary, Jane and Jo – great to see you all again at Betchworth Park yesterday. Another successful day and think we have the format just about right. See you in 2018! Helen
Thanks! I agree, I’ve played in many Opens and this one is definitely in my top 3. I also loved that there is no obligation to change afterwards.
Celine,
Thank you for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your day and Betchworth Park; many congratulations to you and your team on your win. I look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Hi Len, thank you very much for a great day. You were absolutely right by the way, bunkers are best avoided on your course… shame I couldn’t heed your advice!
