Type of course? Down the road downland.

Pleasant staff? Didn’t interact as we were there playing a match and our opponents welcomed us and bought us a drink afterwards.

Best hole? I like the 18th par 5 for its invitingly wide fairway and its tricky second shot – you have to land your ball on a narrow bit of fairway dangerously close to a cluster of bunkers to get a good line into the green.

Après golf? Nice cup of tea, but I’ve eaten there before, so I know that the food is really, really good.

Nice round? It was the first round of the Daily Fail Moursomes against two lovely opponents. My partner Jo and I both had a similar day, with no in between: we were either brilliant or atrocious, but luckily, we always came to each other’s rescue. It was a lot of fun and we won 4&3.

Special memory? 13th par 3, which was typical of our round. While our (much tidier) opponents were on the green in one, our ball landed in the rough in the middle of trees about 40 yards to the left. I managed a chip that landed 8 feet from the pin and Jo putted it in for par. I think another ridiculous escape rattled our opponents, who three putted, so we won the hole.

Must play again? Yes, on the 25th in another competition.
